5 Low-Effort Cat Care Routine Habits That Make Busy Days Easier

Pre-Mix Wet Food in Batches

Typically, I like to mix up 2-3 day’s worth of my cats’ wet food at a time in a food storage container, along with their daily supplements. This make meal time faster in the mornings and evening. It also makes it easier to make sure they’re getting the right amount of wet food (not too much, not too little). I just spoon out a bit into their bowls every morning and evening and the cats are good to go!

This also helps when you have partners or pet sitters who are taking over feeding duties for the cats for a time. It removes the guesswork and makes mealtime a breeze!

Typically, I like to use either these glass containers or this style of food storage containers.

Top Off the Fountain During Your Morning Routine

It is easy to forget to check the cats’ water fountain levels, so I’ve started just topping it off each morning as I get my coffee ready. I love the fountain we have, and it does have a notice light for when it is low, but it can be easy to miss. Making this into a daily routine keeps it from falling through the cracks. Plus, it gives me a chance to make sure that the filter is working and that the water is clean.

As I mentioned, I absolutely love this Petlibro fountain for my cats. It’s quiet and the filters do a great job. For replacing the filter, I keep a note on our refrigerator of when I last changed it, so I know when they’re due for a new one.

Keep Grooming Supplies in an Easy-Access Spot

Keeping some kind of grooming caddy or even just a designated spot for your pet’s grooming tools makes it easier to get these tasks done without fanfare. I find that cats can sense when we’re up to something (like trying to find the nail clippers). So, if they sense something is going on, it can make nail trimming or brushing into an ordeal. If you keep these supplies at hand in a small bin or basket, you can even get in some quick touch ups when you’re pet is relaxed. This keeps everyone happier.

For my cats, I love this deshedder brush along with these mini brushes for non-shedding season, and these nail trimmers.

Soft Rest Spots, Sunny Perches, and “Cat TV”

For low-effort enrichment, whether I’m home or out, I like to keep window blinds open and cozy spots set up for the cats to enjoy their cat tv. Sometimes my cats will sit on window sills. Other times they’ll lounge in beds that give them a good vantage point of the birds and squirrels outside. The kitties especially like to hang out in the sun beams coming in through our catio doors!

Either way, it helps keep them entertained and out of trouble (and, at least some of the time, off of my desk when I’m working from home).

For a bonus, add some catnip toys and catnip spray to the beds or this fun interactive toy to the areas where your cat loves to lounge. It gives them a little extra boost of entertainment, if they so desire!

Pick A Daily Anchor Time for Litter Box Cleanup

Whether you do it daily — or every other day, or whatever works for you and your clowder — make cleaning out the litter box or changing the Litter Robot bag into a regular cat care routine. Adding this to your to-do checklist makes the task automatic. This way, you won’t suddenly realize it’s been too long between cleanings.

Whenever you clean out the litter boxes, be sure to add more litter and litter attractant to keep them at appropriate levels to keep your furbabies happy!

Your Cat Care Routine Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Life is complicated enough — you don’t have to make taking care of your furbabies into a whole song and dance. Make small swaps and add a few easy routines to make both of your lives easier! These low-effort cat mom life habits help me feel more on top of things — even when the day gets away from me. Whether you try one or all five, your future self (and your cats) will be grateful for the smoother routine.
